Obtaining a registration number

When you should apply for a number?

In the following cases, a new registration number must first be applied for before the vehicle can be registered:

  • registration of a new vehicle;
  • purchase/registration of a vehicle registered in a another country;
  • purchase of a vehicle already registered in the Grand Duchy under a personalised registration number belonging to the former owner;
  • purchase of a vehicle registered under a number in the old format (2 letters and 3 digits or 1 letter and 4 digits);
  • re-registration of a vehicle.

Applying for a registration number of the current series

You can apply for a registration number of the current series electronically:

  • online via MyGuichet.lu:
  • or by sending an e-mail to nplaques@snca.lu. Applicants must complete the form in respect of the application for the assignment of a registration number (Demande d'attribution d'un numéro d'immatriculation).

The registration number assigned to a person is the first one available of the current series.

The process takes one or two working days.

The applicant will receive mail at his/her official home address indicating the number that has been allocated.

Numbers of the current series are composed as follows:

  • 2 letters and 2 digits for mopeds and light quadricycles;
  • 2 letters and 4 digits for all other vehicles.

Applying for a personalised registration number

There are 4 distinct series of personalised registration numbers:

  • for mopeds and light quadricycles;
    • 2 letter and 2 digits;
  • for all other vehicles:
    • a 5-digit number;
    • 2 letters and 4 digits; or
    • a 4-digit number.

You can apply for a personalised registration number (excluding a 4-digit number) electronically:

  • via MyGuichet.lu:
  • or by sending an e-mail to nplaques@snca.lu. Applicants must complete the form in respect of the application for the assignment of a registration number (Demande d'attribution d'un numéro d'immatriculation).

The MyGuichet.lu assistants make it possible to check that a registration number is available.

The process takes one or two working days.

The applicant will receive mail at his/her official home address indicating that the number requested has been allocated.

Applying for a 4-digit registration number

Since 4-digit registration numbers are no longer available, applications are put on a waiting list in order of receipt; the numbers are allocated in that order. It can take several years to be assigned a 4-digit registration number. As such numbers only become very rarely available, the applicant will be assigned a totally random number.

You can apply for a 4-digit registration number electronically via MyGuichet.lu with authentication.

4-digit registration numbers are limited to one per person.

Once the application has been accepted by the SNCA, an applicant can consult his/her position on the waiting list in his/her personal space on MyGuichet.lu.

When a 4-digit number has been reserved in the name of an applicant, the applicant will receive mail at his/her official home address indicating what number has been assigned.
