Obtaining a duplicate

If all or part of a registration certificate has been stolen, lost, destroyed or damaged, a duplicate can be requested from the SNCA, on the basis of a duly substantiated request.

Who does this apply to?

  • Anyone living in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg who owns or holds a vehicle.

Prerequisites

In the case of theft, the theft must be declared immediately to the Police grand-ducale of the place where the theft is thought to have taken place.

  • A duplicate of Part I (grey) of the registration certificate will only be issued to the holder of the registration certificate for the vehicle concerned or to a person mandated by him/her for this purpose.
  • A duplicate of part II (yellow) of the registration certificate will only be issued to the owner of the vehicle concerned or to a person mandated by him/her for this purpose, if the vehicle is registered in the national road vehicle database. Where no owner is recorded in the national road vehicle database, the holder of the Part I (grey) registration certificate may also be issued with a duplicate Part II (yellow) registration certificate.
  • The issue of a duplicate of a registration certificate or part of a registration certificate is subject to payment of the fee provided for in the aforementioned Grand-Ducal regulation of 12 November 1981, except in the case of theft of a document, certified by a declaration of theft drawn up by an official of the Police grand-ducale, or, if the theft occurred abroad, by a representative of an authority competent to draw up such a certificate.

Supporting documents

A duplicate registration certificate of a vehicle can be issued on production of the following documents:

  • the completed and signed application form for obtaining a duplicate (Demande en obtention d'un duplicata);
  • the required 'Droit de Chancellerie' tax stamp; In the case of theft, the stamp is not required, but the declaration of theft must be attached to the application;
  • the passport or ID card of the holder, owner or keeper of the vehicle;

Application processing

The procedure to request a duplicate of a registration certificate can be done:

 

  • by making the online procdure at Myguichet.lu (private individuals only).

  • by attending one of the SNCA's reception together with the supporting documents.
     
  • by sending an application together with the supporting documents by post, preferably by registered post.
